History of NORDYNE (continued)
Over the next few years, the company
identified the challenges in the production
of manufacturing both residential and
manufactured housing product lines. While
the technology was the same, it had to be
applied differently since each was built to
a different set of installation code requirements.
In 1994, the company implemented Demand Flow
Technology (DFT) in the manufacturing
plants, and it was designed using the
theories of Just-In-Time along with quality
control measures. By following the
processes, NORDYNE was able to reduce
inventory investment, meet better customer
turnaround demand and assure that every
point of the manufacturing process had a
quality checkpoint to reduce overall
potential for product failures. By 1998,
NORDYNE became the first manufacturer to be
DFT-certified.
Between 1998 and 2002, NORDYNE introduced
additional consumer-friendly brands,
including Westinghouse, Maytag and Gibson to
meet the various market needs. These brands
not only
came with a long history of
innovation, they came with years of
established consumer awareness.
This allowed
the products to be quickly accepted by
homeowners.
Commitment to quality paid off for NORDYNE.
Since the early 1990s, NORDYNE has been
repeatedly recognized by Copeland (now
Emerson Climate Technologies) for having the
fewest compressor failures in the HVAC
market. Because of the confidence in its
quality, NORDYNE introduced in 2000 the
industry’s first manufacturer-backed
warranty over five years, along with a
guarantee to replace the unit within the
first five years of ownership if the
compressor failed. This was the first
replacement ever provided by a manufacturer
on all compressor-bearing products in the
residential marketplace. Additionally, the
furnaces also carried the same guarantee on
the heat exchangers. The warranty length
continued to grow along with the quality
pledge promise of major component
replacement. Today, NORDYNE products hold a
10-year limited warranty on parts and a
10-year quality pledge. Maytag products are
even longer – up to 12 years.
In 2005, the government passed legislation
raising the minimum energy efficiency
standards of central air conditioning and
heat pump products from 10 SEER to 13 SEER.
NORDYNE not only met the 13-SEER challenge,
they also introduced the most energy
efficient air conditioner in the market: the
iQ Drive®. The iQ Drive is rotary-inverter
technology for central air conditioner
application in the residential market.
In 2007, the iQ Drive air conditioner system
was awarded the Dealer Design Gold Award (highest) in the residential energy
efficient products category. The Dealer
Design Awards sponsored by The Air
Conditioner, Heating and Refrigeration News
and selected by an independent panel of
heating and cooling contractors. In 2008,
The iQ Drive air conditioning system won
best-in-category for cooling performance as
well as the best overall winner among all
category winners for the 2008 International
Expo Award Winners.
With the cost of natural gas on the rise,
NORDYNE introduced iHybrid® dual fuel
packaged units in 2007. A year later,
NORDYNE introduced ecoLogic, a green seal to
help homeowners and contractors identify the
company’s most energy efficient products.
